Johannisfest Mainz

Posted by on August 17, 2011

The Johannisfest in Mainz is once a year and lasts for 4 days. It’s the traditional Mainz Midsummer St. John’s Night Festival, celebrating Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press.

I enjoy going there because there are loads of small little stalls along the Rhein where loads of different stuff is sold. There are all sorts of jewelry, clothes, leather bags, statues for the garden, etc… and most of it is handmade. Further into the city there are stages where musicians play in the afternoon until the night and it’s always a great atmosphere at this festival, no matter where you are. 🙂

This year we were very lucky because it was one of the rare sunny and hot days this summer had to offer! Also, it was the first day of the female soccer world cup and we watched the first match at a beach bar, drinking self-made lemonade.

If you are ever in Mainz around June, make sure you check this festival out! 😉
